What’s the purpose of the internet? To share cute cat photos! (Okay, not really, but that’s why most of us use it) Nothing beats adorable kittens. And even certain older cats catch our attention and go on our Instagram feeds. Cute felines brighten our day, make us laugh, and convince even the most stubborn dog-lover that cats aren’t half-bad. Maybe you love certain coat patterns. Or perhaps particular features stand out. Whatever the reason, people adore cute cats. And everyone has their own idea of which are the cutest cat breeds. Some breeds show up on lists over and over. And those are the adorable felines we want to share with you.

Cute

Humans (well, all mammals) naturally flock to “cute.” It’s in our programming. Why do you think baby animals all share similar features? The basic baby blueprint encourages parents to WANT to take care of helpless infants. And those “baby” features work on older siblings or even strangers:

  • Bigger head than the body
  • Round face
  • Large eyes
  • Small nose

When you see cats with these similar features, you tuck them into the cutest cat breeds category – even when they’re adults. Add in specific coat patterns or affectionate personalities, and you can’t help it – you get hooked. You’ll spend entire days flipping through photos! If you happen to see one of these kitties out somewhere, you simply MUST snuggle them. That’s the cute part of the brain going into overdrive.

The Trouble With Cute

Of course, “looks aren’t everything.” While many of the cutest cat breeds entice us to cuddle, they may not suit your lifestyle – or your budget. Many of the most adorable breeds tip the price scales. Their unique appearance often results from careful breeding, and supply can’t keep up with demand. You may need to save up to bring a kitten home.

And while adorable in photos, a cat’s personality may NOT charm you. Some of the cutest cat breeds come with LONG lists of personal demands, and you could find yourself with a gorgeous tyrant on your hands. Relying on the appearance of a breed without researching the personality is NEVER a good idea. While it’s fine to admire a cute picture, bringing a cat home without doing your homework is a bad idea.

“It’s better to choose a cat by its personality rather than cuteness. Because looks can change, and it’s not fair to the cat. You’re providing a home for this animal for the next fifteen years.”

~Teresa Keiger, All-Breed Judge for The Cat Fancier’s Association

Cutest Cat Breeds

Will your personal list of cutest cat breeds match this one? Maybe. Everyone has their favorites. And there are HUNDREDS of breeds to choose from. Some people like special coat patterns. Other people like unique features. And still others prefer kitties with personality. (Of course, even THAT varies as some want lap-warmers and others want playful companions) In this list, you’ll find a healthy mixture of ALL of those traits. And there’s no denying the cute factor. From kitten to adult, these cats have it all. They’re sweet and adorable, and you’ll love learning about them – and finding more pictures to peruse.

Cutest Cat Breeds From Asia

How to divide up adorable felines with such diverse traits? Why not look at where the breed originated from? These entrancing cats come from the largest continent – Asia. And you’ll see short hair, long hair, and stunning gazes. The cutest cat breeds from the massive landmass are every bit as intriguing as the land they call home. However, they have some special concerns to keep in mind. You’ll want to make sure you do some careful research!

  • Persian: With tiny noses and mouths, Persians retain cute kitten features throughout their lives. And they know how to pose for pictures! They recline wherever they’re comfortable, basking in your attention. Even as kittens, they have long, luxurious fur that you’ll need to groom daily. A quality cat brush is a MUST for these adorable cats. If you don’t keep up, you’ll end up with mats.
  • Russian Blue: With stunning emerald eyes, Russian Blues always rank on the cutest cat breed list. It doesn’t hurt that the corners of their mouths curve up, giving them a permanent feline smile, either. There’s a slight silver sheen to their coat, setting them apart from the usual grey cats one encounters. You’ll need to mind their food amounts, though. If not watched carefully, they’ll turn into butterballs.
  • Siamese: Records of the Siamese appear as far back as 1351! These adorable cats have points (darker shades to the ears, muzzle, paws, and tail) and captivating blue eyes. Everyone knows a Siamese when they see one – or when they HEAR one! This cute cat is one of the most vocal out there, and they insist on registering their opinion on everything. Make sure you’re ready for a talkative feline companion.
  • Siberian: With beautiful fluffy coats and round faces, Siberians meet the “cute” requirement from kitten through adult. They’re one of the larger cat breeds, topping out at close to 16 pounds. The breed comes from the taiga region (the biome below a tundra) of Siberia, and they have a dense coat with a heavy undercoat they’ll shed. You’ll want to have a quality vacuum in the house.

Cutest Cat Breeds From Europe

Some of the cutest cat breeds aren’t always well-known. At least, not in the United States. But if you cross the Atlantic? You’ll find these adorable felines in plenty of homes. And they’re starting to gain in popularity. For a good reason! They’re too cute to resist. Different features stand out from the cat crowd and catch people’s eyes. And most of the time, these cat breeds got their start from a single unusual mutation. Breeders work carefully to keep these charming kitties healthy and happy – and you should do the same!

  • Birman: Birmans come from France, and they pair dark points with fluffy tails. They’re adorable and dignified at the same time – something that earned them the title of “Sacred Cat of Burma.” You’ll fall in love with their blue eyes and soft-as-silk fur. And while they love to play and spend time with you, they DON’T want to venture outside. They also prefer to have the company of another feline – perhaps another Birman?
  • British Shorthair: British Shorthairs never lose their round, chubby cheeks, making them a shoo-in for the cutest cat breed list. You can’t help but wonder what secrets they’re keeping behind those big eyes. And with thick plush fur – which doesn’t shed very much – they make the perfect lapcats. They ARE on the expensive side, though, so make sure you’re prepared for the cost.
  • Devon Rex: How do you resist the large, round ears of the Devon Rex? These adorable kitties retain their kitten behavior throughout their lives – and nothing’s cuter than that. They have a curled coat, something that popped up from a stray male breeding with a tortoiseshell. The result? A Devon Rex named Kirlee (get it?). These social cuties love staying close to your side at all times.
  • Scottish Fold: You can’t make a list of the cutest cat breeds and NOT include the Scottish Fold. With large eyes and ears tucked tight to their heads, these adorable felines charm EVERYONE. The ear fold popped up spontaneously in a litter of kittens, and you can end up with Scottish Folds with OR without the gene. They’re sweet and intelligent, and they LOVE to stand upright like meerkats. What could be cuter?

Cutest Cat Breeds From the United States

Close to home, the cutest cat breeds continue to dazzle with their unique coats, stunning personalities, and special features. You’ll find yourself charmed by all of them, wanting nothing more than to snuggle each one close. However, these kitties come with a catch. All of them fall into the higher price bracket. So if you’re hoping to bring them home, make sure you’ve considered the cost. They’re cute, but they’re also pricey. Weigh the pros and cons – and do your homework on the breed.

  • Bengal: The striking patterns of their coats – visible from kittenhood – earn Bengals a spot on the cutest cat breed list. Add in the fact those rosettes come on thick plush fur, and these felines are hard to resist. And every Bengal has an iridescent sheen, almost like they’re walked under a fall of gold glitter. They’re precious! You’ll want to prepare for their demanding energy needs, though – and mind the high spaces!
  • Maine Coon: All the fluff! Maine Coons pack on the fluffiness from the tips of their ears to their toes. Then you factor in their sweet temperaments, and it’s cuteness overload. They also use different vocal tones to “talk” with you. Even dog-lovers find themselves warming up to and admitting enchantment with Maine Coons. You DO need to take care of that fur, though.
  • Munchkin: Munchkins are the Dachshunds of the feline world. And how do you resist a cat on itty-bitty legs? They’re too cute for words. And they LOVE everyone. They have tons of energy and want to be a part of everything you do. Those little legs don’t slow them down in the slightest. You also DON’T need to worry about the back issues you see in the long-backed canines.
  • Ragdoll: People add Ragdolls to the cutest cat breed list because of their enchanting personalities. They look adorable with their points, but they also relax into your arms like – well, like a ragdoll. These felines LOVE attention, and there’s nowhere they’d rather be than in your lap. They need attention to their soft, plush coat, of course. But sweetness? They have it in spades.

Cute Overload

Cats and cute? That’s a lethal combination. And while cute IS subjective, some kitties stand out with specific characteristics. The cutest cat breeds have unique features that draw us in – even when they AREN’T kittens. (Since we know EVERY kitten tops the adorable chart) And the most precious felines span the globe. You’re sure to fall in love with at least ONE of them.

At the very least, you know you’ll feel the urge to snuggle YOUR cat.

Andria Kennedy

Andria grew up in a pet-friendly household. On weekends, the family made trips to zoos and aquariums in the area. So it wasn’t a surprise when she gravitated toward a career with animals.

After six years working among the background operations at the Philadelphia Zoo, she gained a unique insight into the veterinary world. The vet staff provided her first lessons in terminology, the identification of medical equipment, and glimpses of radiographs (x-rays). She also enjoyed plenty of opportunities to talk with everyone, including the veterinary technicians. And they offered an alternative for someone NOT interested in surgical pathways: Namely, their course of study.

Andria enrolled at Harcum College. Philadelphia boasts two programs for vet techs, but only Harcum works with the Ryan Veterinary Hospital and New Bolton Center (University of Pennsylvania’s small and large animal facilities, respectively). Harcum’s vet tech students receive six months of hands-on teaching and experience alongside Penn’s vet students.

With the opportunities and connections available with one of the top veterinary schools, the decision was easy for her to make.

New Bolton Center: Large Animal Medicine
Andria ended up trudging through snow up to the knee and shivering in subzero temperatures during her winter semester, but she wasn’t disappointed with her choice. New Bolton provided a thorough grounding in large animal medicine. A horse-lover as a child, the experience renewed those old emotions.

And a few memories stood out and remained to this day:

  • Standing alongside a Clydesdale and feeling TINY
  • Holding the reins of a horse galloping at top speed on a treadmill
  • Nursing tiny foals through the first days of their life

Ryan Veterinary Hospital: Small Animal Medicine
Veterinary students can legally work at a practice while studying. Andria took advantage of the opportunity, gaining “real life” experience while attending class. It provided a slight advantage when she entered her three months at the small animal hospital.

However, as Ryan Veterinary Hospital offers treatments unique to the veterinary community, she continued to gain valuable experience. For instance, she spent a day working alongside their Chemo Team. The positivity of everyone she encountered – staff, clients, and patients alike – left a lasting impression.

Additional standout moments included:

  • An afternoon spent with the head of the feline kidney transplant program
  • A day serving as the anesthesia technician in their new radiation unit
  • Recognizing a radiograph of a giant elephant shrew (applying her previous zoo knowledge)

Emergency/ICU Veterinary Technician
Accompanying her Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology, Andria received a passing score on the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). The two led to her certification/license as a veterinary technician – first in Pennsylvania (CVT) and later in Virginia (LVT).

Emergency medicine appealed to her from the beginning. The flux of ailments, injuries, and even species kept her mind sharp at all times. The knowledge required to handle cats, dogs, exotics, and even wildlife is highest in an ICU setting. When a vet tech never knows the patient’s stability coming back to the treatment area, skills and the ability to respond in an instant always stay in peak shape.

With treatments evolving at a constant basis, Andria sought out the best Continuing Education opportunities. She attended the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (IVECCS) Conference whenever possible. This allowed her to discuss the latest wound treatments, medications, and advancements in diet formulations.

Cardiology Veterinary Technician
With the increased knowledge and experience, Andria noticed gaps in her abilities. Her grasp of cardiology remained at the basic level. She wanted to boost her skills and understanding as much as possible, improving her patient care. When an opportunity within the practice arose to move into the cardiology department, she accepted.

She sharpened her ability to read ECGs, recognizing arrhythmias of every type. Speaking with the cardiologist, she learned to read echocardiograms, picking out the most common disease processes. And, courtesy of her position in the department, she took in everything she could regarding the grain-free diet concern.

And throughout her ten-year career, she built her store of client interactions. She learned stories of heartbreak and hope. In the middle of the night, she shared touching and humorous conversations. Every moment taught her to engage with people. And the skill blended into her writing ability, capturing the interest of pet-lovers everywhere.
